Hyundai‘s high-performance N division is set to introduce a lightweight carbon-fibre hybrid wheel option.
A 21-inch prototype version of this wheel, jointly developed by Dymag and Hankuk Carbon, was shown off at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed alongside a range of other new Hyundai N Performance products for the Ioniq 5 N.
This wheel blends a composite outer rim, made from carbon fibre, with a machined forged metallic centrepiece.
It’s claimed to have a weight saving of between 40 to 50 per cent compared to a traditional cast aluminium wheel. It’s also claimed to reduce rolling inertia and offer improved stiffness and strength.
Full specifications of this 21-inch carbon-fibre hybrid wheel for the Hyundai N Performance product range will be detailed in the coming months.
Dymag also claims to be in “advanced stages” with a number of other carmakers, with more supply agreements to be announced soon.
The company currently offers a range of carbon-fibre hybrid wheels measuring from 18-inches to 23-inches in diameter. It will add new 24-inch and 25-inch examples to its portfolio later in 2023.
It’s unclear if the 21-inch carbon-fibre hybrid wheels will be available on the Ioniq 5 N globally, or if it will be limited to certain markets.
It’s also unclear if Hyundai N plans to offer similar types of carbon-fibre hybrid wheels on other vehicles in its portfolio.
Hyundai N revealed its first electric vehicle (EV) at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed ahead of its Australian arrival in the first half of 2024.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain that produces total system outputs of 448kW of power and 740Nm of torque.
There’s also an ‘N Grin Boost’ (NGB) function that ups the outputs to 478kW and 770Nm for 10 seconds.
These two electric motors are fed by an 84kWh battery pack, which is the highest capacity battery Hyundai has ever offered in an EV.
Hyundai hasn’t confirmed an official range figure for the Ioniq 5 N yet, though it will be announced at “regional market launch”. Energy consumption figures haven’t been confirmed either.
Would you option these 21-inch carbon-fibre hybrid wheels on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N?
