Are you thinking about an electric vehicle (EV), but you’re not sure how it’s going to handle a Canadian winter? Hyundai is getting its high-performance Ioniq 5 N ready by testing it in Sweden at -30°C.
The “5 N” will be the first all-electric model in the company’s N performance lineup, and it’s being put through its paces at the Hyundai Mobis Proving Ground in Arjeplog, Sweden, close to the Arctic Circle.
This particular round of testing isn’t just about the battery, but how the vehicle performs in low-grip situations such as cold weather and icy surfaces. Hyundai said the low-temperature testing helps engineers balance driving fun with the car’s “ability to perform safely and predictably in sub-zero conditions.”

5 Reasons to love Hyundai’s new Ioniq 5
The Ioniq 5 N will be the first production N vehicle with all-wheel drive through dual electric motors. It will include a driving mode for drifting that adjusts front and rear torque distribution, suspension stiffness, steering effort, and its electronic limited-slip differential, or e-LSD. It’s known as the N Drift Optimizer and it’s intended to help drivers of all skill levels to make it around the corners with authority, especially if they’ve never done anything like it before.
We don’t have full specs yet, but rumours are that the 5 N will have around 600 horsepower – and possibly a simulated dual-clutch gearbox with equally-faux but realistic-seeming sound and feel, including a rev limiter and driveline vibration.
The Ioniq 5 N will be unveiled globally in July 2023, with more information released as the date gets closer. In the meantime, if you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to test a car at -30°C, read up on Renita Naraine’s trip to Kapusaksing, Ontario to GM’s cold-weather facility there.
