WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-director, Kemp Powers, remains tight-lipped about the highly anticipated sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse. While fans are eager for any tidbits of information, Powers has been “sworn to silence”, refraining from divulging any details about the plot. Across the Spider-Verse continues the story of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, who traverse the vast Multiverse, encountering a group of Spider-People from various dimensions. These diverse heroes must band together, pooling their unique abilities to safeguard the very essence of the Multiverse. However, their unity and strength is put to the test as an unprecedented threat emerges, compelling Miles to question his own principles and redefine his understanding of what it truly means to be a hero.
The film takes an unexpected twist as Miles finds himself transported to Earth-42, an alternate universe unlike his own, Earth-1610. Here, he is confronted by an evil version of himself known as The Prowler. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Powers was asked about Beyond the Spider-Verse. He responded with a mix of apology and reluctance, stating:
“I can’t really comment at all on the third one. I’m sorry to just give you a big ol’ non-answer. But really, it’s only because people are so desperate for information, and everything kind of ends up getting misread or misquoted. I’ve been sworn to silence. As soon as you say Beyond the Spider-Verse, my mouth closes.”
What To Expect From Beyond the Spider-Verse
In a prior revelation, Kemp Powers hinted at the exploration of Miles’ emotional and unpredictable journey in the third film. While Miles remains motivated by the desire to save his father, his path is intertwined with a distorted reality born from a series of events closely linked to his own existence. Escaping this unfamiliar world won’t be a straightforward task; instead, Miles finds himself driven to make amends and rectify the perceived harm caused by his actions.
“It was really important to have this thing where Miles wants to save his dad, but then he’s faced with this Pottersville version of a world that was created because of this thing that happened to him. It’s not going to be as simple as him wanting to just escape this world. He’s going to try and do right by people who feel he’s done wrong by, and that just felt more potentially emotional and unpredictable as we go into the third film. It complicates his mission in a way that we hope people find unexpected and also thrilling.”
In a recent interview with Collider, Joaquim Dos Santos, one of the directors of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, addressed the absence of fan-favorite character Spider-Ham in the latest sequel. Dos Santos acknowledged the concerns and expressed that the limited presence of the anthropomorphic pig variant of Peter Parker was due to time constraints during the development of the film. He explained that certain scenes featuring Spider-Ham were cut early on to streamline the storytelling. However, Dos Santos reassured fans that their disappointment will be rectified in the upcoming sequel, promising that when they delve back into the Spider-Verse next year, they can expect to see more of Spider-Ham.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters, while the sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled for release on March 29, 2024.
