I Can’t Even Describe Miley Cyrus’s New Hair Color

Miley Cyrus has had her fair share of different hair colors over the years, but while her hairstyle has changed somewhat frequently over just the last year or so, one thing has remained true: Her color has been some version of a combo of platinum blonde and nearly black. Yesterday, however, the “Flowers” singer debuted a new look that, while still bold, appears to be a softer take on the high-contrast look.

In March, Cyrus’s hair was seen with a top layer of platinum blonde over a bottom layer of very dark brown with visible roots of a similar in a middle-parted, naturally wavy, long style. On April 23, she wore a similar style for her appearance at The Daily Front Row‘s Fashion Los Angeles Awards — but her color has changed significantly.

Although the bottom layer of Cyrus’s hair is still dark, it’s a richer’s ever so slightly lighter brown — and it’s no longer limited to just the underside. The now asymmetrical look paints an almost Cruella-esque picture by being mostly dark brown on one side of her middle part and and mostly blonde on the other. And it’s no longer a solid platinum blonde but rather a mix of cool and slightly warmer blondes blended throughout.

It feels like a wonderfully irregular evolution of money pieces, the two-tone highlighting trend that sees a noticeably lighter color framing the face. And it’s apparently long overdue. Cyrus has said she wanted to go darker for New Year’s Eve but that Dolly Parton talked her out of it.

Now that the change has finally occurred, we’re not even sure to call it. Controlled chaos? A beautiful mess? Most likely: the next big hair color trend.
