‘I don’t talk to haters anymore’: Cara Delevingne on her character in Only Murders in the Building, playing Selena Gomez’s love interest, and blocking out the haters

In her latest interview with GLAMOUR, Cara Delevingne reveals what it’s like to play Selena Gomez’s love interest (as well as being firm friends IRL), how she’s embracing her new role in Only Murders in the Building, and why she’s always got time for a random act of kindness.

In season two of Only Murders in the Building, Cara Delevingne plays Alice: an art dealer and gallery owner who unobtrusively but purposefully enters the life of Selena Gomez’s character Mabel.

Mabel herself is the prime suspect in a murder case and tries to prove her innocence with the help of her podcast co-hosts, Oliver (Martin Short) and Charles (Steve Martin). Alice, unconventional and direct, is a nice change and so – SPOILER ALERT – Mabel and Alice become more than just BFFs. The two get to know each other, date and make out, but will they make it as a proper couple? Only time will tell.

Cara, who describes herself as genderfluid and pansexual, spoke to GLAMOUR about Alice and Mabel’s relationship and what made the character of Alice so interesting to her.

These days, when two women kiss, it should be normal for everyone. But, unfortunately, it’s not. The fact that Cara Delevingne and Selena Gomez (as Alice and Mabel) will kiss and maybe even have a relationship with each other in the second season of Only Murders in the Building is almost guaranteed to make waves on the Internet.

So, is Cara Delevingne prepared for this kind of attention? “I don’t really have to talk to the haters. I don’t waste energy on that anymore,” she told GLAMOUR. “Let them think what they want – they’ll be on the wrong side of history. I didn’t think beforehand about how the kiss between us might go down with the viewer’s.”

Cara thinks the story behind her character Alice and the rest of the cast of the murder-mystery series on Disney+ is much more important: “Audiences will be surprised by the storylines overall – not just Mabel and I kissing. They’ll be perplexed by how mysterious my character Alice really is.”

Her character is an art dealer who also happens to let Mabel destroy a sculpture with a hammer. But how art-savvy is Cara Delevingne? Which artist in hangs on her wall in real life? “James Turrell,” she laughs. “You’ll only find James Turrell on my walls! I’m joking – I like other works of art too. But a piece of his art is the first one I bought for myself. I love him very much.”

The second season of Only Murders is also set in New York, in a huge apartment building. Could the crime-comedy series be set anywhere but the Big Apple? “In London, maybe,” Cara Delevingne muses. “That could work, but really Only Murders is a typical New York story. The only way the series would work somewhere else is if they traveled together. I’m sure that would be super funny. ‘Only Murders in Kathmandu,’ for example. That would be so random that it would just have to be funny.”
