I enjoy being thrown different challenges: KL Rahul | Cricket News – Times of India

KOLKATA: Not many can adjust to the different roles that KL Rahul has been asked to play over the years. The 30-year-old, who is a regular Test opener, dons the wicket-keeping gloves in whiteball cricket and has been used as a floater in the batting order. But the Karnataka player has no complaints and he said he is enjoying the challenges.
“Any role that helps win matches for my team and country is what satisfies me the most,” he said after guiding India to a series-sealing win over Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens. “I’ve been all over. It’s fun for me. I’ve really enjoyed being thrown different challenges. A different role helps me understand my game better. I’ve really thrived on performing in tough conditions and being put under pressure,” he added.
Rahul didn’t pick his preferred role. “Firstly, I want to be in the playing XI, that’s the most important thing. Once you are there, whatever the team requires me to do, I try and do that. That’s something that I’ve done throughout since I’ve started playing for India.
“I went on to open, played at No. 6 and when Shikhar (Dhawan) got injured, I opened again, played at No. 4 and 5,” he said.
He did the job for India coming down the order on Thursday, finishing off with Kuldeep Yadav.
“Batting with the tail is not something I have done often. But yes, that’s also an area to work on where you need to know your partner well and make it clear what is needed from him in the middle,” he said.
“I’ve to work slightly differently when it comes to batting in the middle-order. Wicket-keeping and batting can be more taxing on the body.”
Coach Dravid flies back home amid health concerns
Head coach Rahul Dravid didn’t travel with the team to Thiruvananthapuram for Sunday’s third ODI and instead flew back home to his hometown Bengaluru because of health concerns. Local doctors in Kolkata ruled out any major worry.
