Superhero shows are every bit as popular on streaming as their big screen counterparts regardless of whether or not the dwindling critical and commercial responses seem to be edging the target audience closer and closer to full-blown fatigue, but I’m a Virgo still hasn’t made a big enough splash in the cultural consciousness despite comfortably blowing the competition out of the water.
Hailing from the mind of Boots Riley, the social satire that incorporates elements of drama, comedy, coming-of-age, and costumed crimefighting to create a uniquely intoxicating mix that won massive acclaim from critics has been a bit of a slow-burner since premiering on Prime Video on June 23.
It was popular enough to become one of the streaming service’s most-watched episodic titles, but it hasn’t managed to capture attention or imaginations on the same scale as its many of its spiritual counterparts. After ending on an open-ended cliffhanger that left the door ajar for a season 2, there’s been some concern that I’m a Virgo might not do the numbers required to land a renewal.
Fortunately, creator Riley has revealed on Twitter that his latest mind-bending exercise in existentialism is “officially a hit” – something that was presumably relayed to him by Amazon – but he still wants more.
Every bit as heartfelt as it hilarious – not to mention incendiary in its look at capitalism, classism, and corporate machinations – I’m a Virgo is unlike anything else you’ll see on the small screen this year, so maybe it’s best to heed Riely’s advice and ensure it does end up MASSIVE; if only to see where the story goes from here.
