TIRED of watching my teenage boys getting thrills from video games, I took them to Thorpe Park Resort to challenge them to a bit of real-life exhilaration.
We took on the “G-Whizz challenge” — to complete all the big rides in increasing order of G-force or intensity.
The combatants then have to face a super-soaking on the UK’s wettest ride, Tidal Wave.
The boys split into two teams — Storm and his friend Isaac, both 16, against his brother Lucky and his mate Michael, each 13.
Team Teen vs Team Tween.
We started on Depth Charge, and Team Teen took the lead.
They sped through the Flying Fish, then a dizzying waltz on Dobble Tea Party, an explosive 100ft freefall from Detonator and the terrifying intensity of indoor dark ride The Walking Dead.
Then it was a break for lunch and on to Quantum, a magic-carpet ride which almost brought up our sandwiches.
The dystopian Black Mirror Labyrinth was kinder on the tum but ramped up the terror.
They all jumped on Zodiac, a gravity-defying spinning ride, then Vortex’s pendulum — with 15 rotations per minute, 65ft up.
“I dunno if I can do this, it looks intense”, mumbled Isaac — standing beneath Rush, staggeringly high and once the world’s largest speed swing.
But he braved it then finally they battled Samurai, a mighty mechanical arm that creates a whopping 5G force.
With no one wanting to quit, it was neck-and-neck by the time we reached the finale.
After one soaking, Team Teen were washed out so it was a win for Team Tween, who rode the Tidal Wave five times to sopping- wet victory.
The unbridled joy on their faces won it for me.
“That was the best fun I’ve ever had!” said Lucky. “When can we come back?”
Next time I’ll bring towels.
