I tried to save on a Eurostar ticket and found it pays to be prepared

Since 1994, the Eurostar has offered a quick connection for British tourists looking to holiday in France.

It can be one of the more convenient ways to reach the French capital as tourists won’t need to worry about pesky liquid limits.

The high-speed train also takes tourists straight into the centre of the city at Paris’ Gare du Nord, so there’s no need to waste any time trekking to a hotel from the airport.

However, the train can be pricey and I wanted to see if there’s an easy way to save on the price of a ticket.

Travel experts recommend booking as far ahead as possible to secure the best prices and I set out to see if that was true.

Eurostar tickets were extremely pricey on a last-minute trip to Paris from London St Pancras in June.

The cheapest option I could find to leave on June 19 and return three days late on June 22 was £223.

However, if I looked at options for August, even during the peak of the school summer holiday, tickets were much more reasonable.

Leaving on August 14 and returning three days later on August 17, cost just £93, a saving of £130. Look out for offers, part of this trip was under a £39 ticket offer from Eurostar.

In October, outside of the school holidays, I found a return ticket for under £80, leaving on the 2nd and returning on the 5th.

The lowest fares are usually for the early morning or late evening trains so it definitely pays to be flexible on departure time. If your hotel won’t let you check in until the afternoon, you might not even miss out by travelling later in the day.

Eurostar tickets include two pieces of luggage and one piece of luggage. Britons should arrive with plenty of time before their train as queues have been long since the additional checks required by Brexit.

If you’re planning to travel through Europe on more trains, an Interrail pass could also help you to save. Tourists do have to pay for a seat reservation on Eurostar even with an Interrail pass but this should be just £25.

Senior tourists, those aged 60 and over, can get a discount on an Interrail pass which is worth checking out.
