The scenes which unfurled after Shubman Gill’s majestic match-winning six over long-on at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, gave a surreal visual of a generational shift which the nation is set to witness in the coming times.
Ian Bishop cracking narration in the background only added weight to Gill’s stature which increased manifolds on Sunday. The 23-year-old batter showed supreme flair and talent, single-handedly thrashing RCB out of the IPL 2023.
“Oh!!! What a regal evening. We have had back-to-back hundreds from the King, now the Prince. The man affectionately known as the Prince of Indian batting, nudges up.
“Back-to-back centuries at the end of its league stage and takes them to a magnificent win for Gujarat Titans,” Bishop almost roared in the commentary box as Gill brought up his hundred and won the match with that six on the first ball of the 20th over.

Bishop’s electric commentary gave fans massive goosebumps and ‘Prince’ Gill just added to it with a roaring celebration followed by his trademark classy bow. The Gujarat Titans dugout erupted to celebrate the emphatic 198-run chase with eight wickets and five balls remaining.
The cameramen soon shifted their focus to ‘King’ Kohli who had half of his face covered with his cap. The former captain, who has been waiting to lift the trophy for RCB since the inaugural season in 2008, soon dropped his head in dismay and slammed a bottle on the ground in frustration.
The star batter had slammed a hundred in the first innings to propel RCB to a fighting total. The hundred was his second consecutive. The 34-year-old scored 100 off 63 in his last outing against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Interestingly, Gill also scored a hundred against SRH in his last knock on Monday before blasting unbeaten 104 off 52 balls against RCB. Gill is now just 20 runs short of becoming the second player after Faf du Plessis to complete 700 runs in IPL 2023.
It was probably for the first time that Kohli was seen helpless and clueless because of the brilliance of an opposition batter. Few of the shots from Gill had him shaking his head in disbelief and disappointment.
Gill owned Chinnaswamy in front of Kohli’s lady love and wife Anushka Sharma. Has the next Indian batting superstar truly arrived?
“Go on and lead the next generation,” Kohli had posted in his Instagram Story after the Punjab-born batter’s first IPL hundred on May 15. Gill has also publicly admitted that Kohli is his inspiration and role model.
We have a serious superstar amongst us. And we will enjoy the prince who will be king for a very long time. #ShubmanGill.

Kohli shrugged off his disappointment and hugged Gill after the match and tremendous display of sportsmanship. The moment in total is surreal and nostalgic. It reminds one of the time when Kohli took over the baton from Sachin Tendulkar.
15 years after making his international debut, Kohli’s body language for once also hints that he has found his successor.
