Food retailer Iceland will close some of its branches permanently this month. Despite being Wales’ biggest business, the company is closing two of its Welsh shops.

The first Iceland shop to close this month is located in Rhyl, North Wales. The branch shut its doors today.

More stores across the UK are expected to close by the end of the month.

The supermarket in Rhyl shut today due to a “continuous decline in business at the store”, according to an Iceland spokesperson.

Other shops set to close soon are located in Bromsgrove in Worcestershire and Chineham in Basingstoke.

One of Iceland’s branches on the Isle of Wight will also close in the coming weeks.

This shop is expected to shut its doors on Saturday, March 25.

The Iceland store in St Catherine’s Place in Bedminster will also close on March 25.

As well as the branch in the White Rose Centre in Rhyl, another site in North Wales will also close soon.

The store is located in the Deiniol Centre in Bangor. It will close on March 27, according to Iceland.

A spokesperson confirmed: “The Bangor store will close on Monday, March 27, and The Food Warehouse will open on Tuesday, March 28.

“We want to thank all that have chosen Iceland for their weekly shops and daily essentials over the years.”

They added that although Iceland has grown over the last 10 years, some branches have not been bringing in enough revenue, forcing the company to close them.

The spokesperson said: “Across Iceland and The Food Warehouse we have a portfolio of over UK 1,000 stores, and our retail estate has grown by nearly 200 stores over the last 10 years.

“We typically open more than 20 new stores each year, creating many new jobs and contributing to the growth of local economies.

“At the same time, we continually review the retail experience offered to our customers and have always made a small number of store closures every year, as local shopping patterns change and shop leases expire.

“The business is currently trading very strongly, achieving record market shares.”
