After more than 50 years in business, the oceanside Gladstones restaurant will close this year, with its final meal to be served sometime in October, according to a report by Deadline.
Opening in 1972 in Santa Monica Canyon, the seafood-focused restaurant moved to Sunset Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway in 1981. Since moving to its more scenic location, it gained a loyal following with tourists and locals alike.
Gladstones, which also operates another spot in Long Beach under different ownership, has changed hands several times. Most recently it was owned by former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, who died in April; Riordan’s estate will run the restaurant until September.
A Frank Gehry-designed restaurant by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck is set to replace Gladstones with a complete renovation of the space. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted in 2018 to let the city enter into an agreement with PCH Beach Associates, LLC to redevelop the space. In fact, officials have pushed redevelopment of the 2.8-acre parcel of county-owned land at Will Rogers Beach ever since 2016, when former LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl called the restaurant “seriously deteriorated and outdated.”
The redevelopment is expected to break ground some time in 2024. Puck (best known for his Spago restaurant and line of frozen pizzas), his wife, Gelila Assefa and developer Tom Tellefsen won over city officials during a request for proposal to figure out what to do with the land. While specifics on the building have yet to be revealed, the new development will include one full-service restaurant and a separate deck for public use, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Frank Gehry, considered one of the world’s leading contemporary architects, will design the yet-to-be-named restaurant. Gehry is most famous for the gleaming, neo-futurist Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles and the Binoculars Building (the common name of Google’s Venice campus in Los Angeles).
