I’d never driven NC500 before but it proved perfect for our first campervan trip

I LOVE driving but the idea of spending my holiday doing it never quite appealed.

Give me some sunshine, a lounger and an afternoon beer and I’m a happy man.

But a Nugget has made me have a rethink, after a glorious few days doing the North Coast 500.

My wife Melanie, a Moray girl at heart, has been on at me for years to tour the country in a campervan telling me how much I’d love it.

I finally relented and, as ever, she was right.

After some research we went for the Ford Nugget Plus and it was the perfect travel companion for our near 1,000-mile five-day trek.

We settled down for a well deserved drink within 15 minutes of arriving at Dornoch from Glasgow on the first day.

Popping up the roof is easy, where you reveal a comfy double bed, and can walk around without the fear of hitting your head off the ceiling — even for me at 6ft 3in.

The seats inside the cab fold into a second bed and there’s plenty of storage for clothes and other bits and bobs you need for the adventure.

It features a superb kitchen, with a two-burner gas hob, all utensils and cutlery, plus a sink with hot water.

But the bit I loved most was the fridge. You can comfortably get your food supplies in — or a bottle of Prosecco and some wine in our case.

It even comes with a shower thanks to the well thought out set-up at the back.

With everything ready in no time we could explore our home for the night and, after a stroll on Dornoch beach, we headed into town for dinner before our first Nugget night.

Our next adventure saw more stunning views — the story of our trip — on the way to John O’Groats. The place was mobbed but a quick picture at the famous sign and something was ticked off my bucket list.

We stopped off at the late Queen Mother’s residence the Castle of Mey for a tour — and it was, as you’d expect, incredible.

Then we were back on the road heading for Tongue.

Some of the roads were single track with passing places, but the Nugget handled it with ease.

We rested up at the site before cooking some pasta in our kitchen and when it got a bit colder, the Nugget’s excellent heater had us toasty again in minutes.

Melanie used to love going on holiday to Gairloch as a child and we took the long road stopping off in Durness en route.

We were lucky enough to go to the Maldives on our honeymoon and while it may not have had the same warm temperatures, it was every bit as beautiful with the sandy beach and crystal clear waters.

It was nice to have a base for a few days where we could visit the surrounding areas before making our last trip to Skye.

Our friends Kenny and Joanne said we would love it — and they were right.

It was breathtaking and having only one night there probably wasn’t enough to enjoy it in all its glory.

After five nights it was time for the adventure to end but I certainly have the campervan bug all thanks to our Nugget.

Some people might tire of Scotland’s answer to Route 66 but this home on wheels made it a doddle.
