On Sunday 11 September, Idols SA presenter ProVerb announced the top 10 contestants who will sing for their chance at winning the title of the South African Idol. Sadly, Johannesburg-based Nandi Ndathane and Pietermaritzburg-based Hope Mkhway had to say goodbye to their dream of becoming the season 18 winner of the talent competition.

The contestants who were selected for the top 10 will receive several prizes including R15 000 of music equipment.

‘IDOLS SA’ TOP 10 SING SOUL HITS

This week on Idols SA, the contestants were tasked with singing a song from Spotify’s Soulful Sundays playlist. Mpilwenhle Mokopu, who was the first contestant to make it into the top 10, kicked things off on a high note with Amanda Black’s Kahle. The 23-year-old singer received high praise for her performance from the judges.

“You stayed in your vocals, you became so focused and so aware of your movements. The most important thing is this is a music show, this is a talent show. You didn’t lose a beat one moment, you stayed with your voice and I enjoyed you,” said Thembi Seete.

Up next was Limpopo-born singer Thapelo Malome who sang Celine Deon’s classic, All By Myself. Thapelo wowed the judges.

“That was magnificent,” said Somizi Mhlongo.

FAN-FAVOURITE TY LONER STUNS THE JUDGES

Johannesburg singer Ty Loner, who entered Idols SA for the second time, has been a fan-favourite since the beginning of the competition. On 4 September, The Eldorado Park-born talent sang Burna Boy’s afrobeats banger Last Last, but this time he stripped it down with Lloyd Cele’s love song, Thando

“I think you chose a song great for your voice. I think you chose that is perfect for your style and I’m happy. I can sleep tonight,” said Somizi.

Thembi Seete praised Ty for not “boxing himself” and singing songs from other genres.
