IIT-BHU foundation, a non-profit association of alumni, announced on Monday that it has received a generous gift of US$1million from Boston-based entrepreneur and philanthropist Desh Deshpande and Jaishree Deshpande.
The IIT-BHU, has decided to name its library in memory of Desh’s father Shreenivas Deshpande, a 1948 graduate of the College of Technology, at a function on the institute’s premises on June 24.
The ceremony will be broadcast on digital platform and will also be streamed live on social media handles of IIT-BHU foundation.
“A chance encounter with Dr Godbole, principal of BHU brought my father to this university and that changed his life and that of our family too. We hope this humble gift will have a similar impact on the lives of hundreds of students,” said Desh.
“We are thankful to Desh and his wife Jaishree for this very thoughtful gift. We are fortunate that Shreenivas Deshpande is our alumnus,” said IIT-BHU foundation president Arun Tripathi.
“It is the achievements of distinguished alumni that inspire the faculty and staff to train the technology leaders of the future. We are humbled to be naming the library in honor of Shreenivas Deshpande because he is a living embodiment of the power of knowledge to transform society,” professor Pramod Kumar Jain, director, IIT-BHU said.
Professor Rajeev Srivastava, dean (resource and alumni affairs), IIT-BHU echoed similar sentiments.
Shreenivas Deshpande completed his B.Sc. in industrial chemistry in 1948, spent the next 31 years working in the public sector.
