Modest dresses have been a part of my wardrobe for as long as I can remember. Being Muslim, my sense of style has always been shaped by my faith and it’s something I take pride in, but it’s worth saying that ‘modesty’ is subjective, and everyone interprets it differently.
Dressing modestly has become a lot easier of late, and there are far more options online than there ever were before. I’ve even spotted a few designs on the catwalks.
Ferragamo’s AW23 show saw wide-legged loose fitting trouser silhouettes, while Sacai included skirts paired with boots that showed no legs, and when it comes to the best modest dresses, Chanel and Erdem are leading the way with floral, full-length fits that are set to stay from summer through to winter.
On the high-street, Accessorize’s broderie hem dress – made from pure cotton – is a winner for summery frolics, and Albaray’s ruffle shoulder linen dress makes figuring out what to wear to work a total breeze. Those mornings spent stood in front of my wardrobe, umm-ing and ahh-ing over which floaty dress to pick, are a thing of the past; this one does it all.
I’m around 5 foot 7 inches and often find midi dresses fall a little short on me, so I’ll usually wear leggings and a T-shirt underneath them (lest I have a Marilyn Monroe moment on the London Underground). I’m open to short sleeves and square necklines, as you’ll see below, but will not wear sleeveless or anything too low-cut.
As I previously said, the best modest summer dresses is down to everyone’s personal preferences and beliefs, but from summer wedding guest dresses and cottagecore dresses to long-sleeve dresses and white dresses, there’s sure to be at least one silhouette you’ll fall for.
