As the Rockets try to transition to the next phase of their rebuild under new head coach Ime Udoka, could an established floor general be part of the formula? Houston has started young prospect Kevin Porter Jr. at that position in each of the last two seasons, though he entered the NBA viewed as more of a shooting guard or wing.
According to league insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Udoka is believed to want something more traditional at that position. As Houston enters 2023 free agency armed with approximately $60 million in salary cap flexibility, one viable option on the marketplace could be Toronto’s Fred VanVleet — who could receive a contract in excess of $30 million annually, Scotto reports.

In his latest rumors column published Sunday, Scotto writes:
New Rockets coach Ime Udoka is believed to covet a veteran point guard, according to league sources, and VanVleet is among a wide list of targets for Houston this offseason.
VanVleet averaged 19.3 points (39.3% FG, 34.2% on 3-pointers), 7.2 assists, and 4.1 rebounds with the Raptors last season. The 29-year-old is well regarded for his defensive intensity and leadership, as well, which could mesh well with Udoka’s stated priorities.
VanVleet will be an unrestricted free agent, so the Rockets would be able to try and reach an agreement quickly, if they desire. Free agency negotiations can officially begin on Friday, June 30.
