Moeen Ali: West Indies batting depth ‘scary’

Eoin Morgan has been ruled out of the remainder of England ‘s T20I series against the West Indies with a quad muscle injury.

The England captain picked up the injury in the warm-up ahead of the third T20I and will now miss the final two games of the series in what will be a big blow for his new-look side.

Those matches are must-win for England, who are 2-1 down in the series after losing the first T20I by nine wickets and the second T20I by 20 runs.

As a result, Mirror Sport has taken a look at how Morgan’s absence will affect England going into those games.

Moeen as captain

England have confirmed that Moeen Ali will captain the side in the final two T20Is, having deputised for Morgan in the previous match with vice-captain Jos Buttler missing the series due to his involvement in the Ashes.

Moeen is highly thought of as a captain, with Joe Root describing him as a “natural leader” with a “brilliant cricket brain”, and as the most experienced member of the squad he is the perfect option to take charge of an inexperienced side.

More opportunities for the new faces

Morgan’s absence in the previous game saw two debutants come into the side in the middle order in the form of Phil Salt and Harry Brook.

Although Brook struggled to get going, managing just 10 off 13 balls, Salt made the most of his opportunity, smashing 57 off just 24 balls.

With Morgan now ruled out for the last two games, the pair appear set for more opportunities and will be looking to force their way into contention for this year’s T20 World Cup.

Morgan the coach?

As one of the best captains in world cricket, Morgan’s on-field leadership will be sorely missed.

However, he will remain in Barbados and offer his expertise and insight from the dugout in what could be a precursor to a potential career as coach.

Due to the way he helped transform England’s limited overs side into World Cup winners after taking over as captain, Morgan has been tipped to become a coach when he decides to retire.

Successful captains like Stephen Fleming, Ricky Ponting and close friend Brendon McCullum have all moved into coaching after retirement and all currently work in the IPL.

Given England’s white ball side is one which has been carefully built in his own image, Morgan will surely have plenty of influence from the sidelines in these final two games.
