The 29-year-old did not bat in the fourth and final Test against Australia in Ahmedabad due to the recurrence of the lower back injury. The same problem had ruled him out of the first Test in Nagpur. Iyer’s injury came to the fore after Ravindra Jadeja and Srikar Bharat came to bat ahead of India’s first and only innings at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The BCCI in a release on Day 4 confirmed that the right-hand batter felt pain in his back and was taken for scans. Notably, Iyer missed the ODI series against New Zealand due to the same back issue.
An official statement from the BCCI is awaited over his participation in the ODI series starting March 17 in Mumbai but India fielding coach has confirmed that the Mumbai batter has been ruled out. India have a lot of options in the middle-order and the BCCI might opt to not name a replacement for Iyer.
“Injuries are a part and parcel of the game. We have the best medical facilities and they are well-equipped. We are in coordination (with NCA). Shreyas was ruled out of this series. (We will be able to provide) further updates as and when we know,” India’s fielding coach Dilip told the media in his debut press conference.
Shreyas Iyer to miss IPL 2023?
The troublesome injury has also cast shadow on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain’s participation in the IPL 2023 which starts from March 31. With the 50-over World Cup scheduled to be held in India this year, whether or not Iyer takes a break from the IPL and fully recovers from the injury will be critical. The 2-time champions play their first match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mohali on Saturday, April 1.
