Player of the Match Yashasvi Jaiswal’s marathon 381-ball debut innings saw him score 171 runs. Virat Kohli also inched closer towards his 29th Test hundred before Rahkeem Cornwall dismissed him for 76 runs off 182 balls. Ajinkya Rahane walked in to bat at number five but could score only three runs before being dismissed by Kemar Roach.
Rohit Sharma waited for Ishan Kishan (1* off 20 balls) to open his account in his debut Test match before declaring India’s first innings. Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 37 off 82 balls.
West Indies kept on losing wickets in the second innings as well. Tagenarine Chanderpaul was the first one to depart when Ravindra Jadeja trapped him in front of the stumps in the 10th over. In the 17th over, Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite for the second time in the match.
The veteran off-spinner then got rid of Jermaine Blackwood before Jadeja struck to dismiss Raymon Reifer in the 22nd over. Mohammed Siraj was introduced in the 30th over and he struck immediately after his third delivery nipped back in sharply to hit Joshua Da Silva on the pads.
Later, Ashwin Alick Athanaze (28) and Alzarri Joseph. The 36-year-old completed his second five-wicket haul in the match by getting Rahkeem Cornwall caught by Shubman Gill at forward short leg. The same over (47th) saw him clean bowl Kemar Roach for a 3-ball duck.
With a result close at hand, umpire’s extended the day’s play by 30 minutes, however, West Indies number eleven Jomel Warrican played all kinds of shots during his entertaining 18-ball stay for 18 runs to delay his team’s inevitable defeat. It was Ashwin again who struck for the 12th time in the match to finish with figures of 7/ 71 (best outside India) and hand India a 1-0 lead.
The second and final Test will be played in Barbados from Thursday, July 20.
