Former India women’s team captain Diana Edulji was delighted with the Asia Cup triumph, but felt Harmanpreet Kaur & Co should have chased the 66-run target without losing a wicket against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
India restricted Sri Lanka to 65-9 in 20 overs after being asked to field. Pacer Renuka Singh’s disciplined bowling (3-1-5-3) and spinners Sneh Rana (2-13), Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2-16) were the stars of the bowling unit. India, in reply, lost the wickets of Shafali Verma (5) and Jemimah Rodrigues (2) before opener and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana slammed a 25-ball unbeaten 51. Captain Kaur was unbeaten on 11 as the target was chased down in 8.3 overs.
Edulji felt there was no need to lose wickets. “With just 66 to win, we should not have lost those two wickets. We should have won by 10 wickets.
“You can’t hit every ball out of the ground. There are singles and twos as well. The moment you get into strike-rotation, you can catch up with the run-rate. They [Verma and Rodrigues] have the power to do that. It is just that the attitude has to change and they must put a price on their wicket. They should feel absolutely proud to bat the full 20 overs,” Edulji told Sunday mid-day.

“I’m very happy that the team performed consistently. The last time we lost the trophy to Bangladesh [in 2018], so this was very much needed.
“I’m very happy with Renuka’s performance. She has been consistent, has a good cricketing brain. She knows where to bowl, what line and length to bowl to a left-hander or a right-hander,” Edulji added.
