When Jadeja joined him at the crease, India were in a crisis at 98/5 after being put in to bat by England skipper Ben Stokes, and the duo put up a record-breaking 222 runs for the sixth wicket against England.
At the end of the day’s play, Pant confirmed that he was always going to bat at number five and, contrary to the general impression, was not promoted from number six.
He added that coach Rahul Dravid told him to “play according to the ball.”
India finished the opening day at 338/7, with Mohammad Shami (0*) accompanying Jadeja, who is nearing his century.
Appearing for England at the press conference, Paul Collingwood said: “We are not overawed by what the opposition gets in the first innings.”
He, however, congratulated Pant on his innings.
