India will be without their leader for the match as coach Igor Stimac is serving the last of his two-match suspension after he saw his consecutive red cards in the SAFF Championship 2023 last group against the same rivals in an ill-tempered affair that ended 1-1.
Stimac, who saw a red against Pakistan as well, wasn’t the only one to be given marching orders as Indian striker Rahim Ali and rival Hamad Al-Qallaf had to leave the match early following a scuffle.
Following the match, both sides had to fight hard to book their final spot as India defeated familiar rival Lebanon in a penalty shootout in the second semifinal on July 1 while Kuwait defeated Bangladesh following a solitary goal by defender Abdullah Al-Bloushi in the extra time.
Earlier in the group stages, both Kuwait and India, clubbed in Group A, confirmed their semifinal participation by defeating Nepal and Pakistan before the eventual finalists faced off. India defeated Pakistan 4-0 in a rain-soaked affair with Sunil Chhetri scoring a hattrick before Udanta Singh squared off the result.
India next defeated Nepal 2-0 with Sunil Chhetri finding the net again while Naorem Mahesh Singh scored his maiden international goal after setting up Chhetri for the opening goal. Chhetri scored his fifth goal of the tournament against Kuwait too through a brilliant volley as India dominated the game for the majority of the 90 minutes.
However, the match turned physical in the last 10 minutes as Indian defence lost its focus and was followed by an own goal by Anwar Ali in the injury time. Kuwait, however, are still a worthy rival as they scored two different line-ups in dominating wins over Nepal (3-1) and Pakistan (4-0) before a close affair with India.
