Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), a diamond trade centre located in Surat, India, has surpassed The Pentagon as the world’s largest office building.

The massive structure boasts an impressive 7.1 million sq ft of floor space, dwarfing the 6.7 million sq ft of the US Department of Defense headquarters.

Inside are nine interconnected high-rise buildings, each with 15 floors and serviced by 131 lifts. It offers office space for 4,500 diamond traders, ranging from 300 to 75,000 sq ft.

SDB offers world-class amenities such as conference rooms, restaurants, banks and shops, along with tight security measures.

It also has a customs house, a national diamond research institute, an international convention centre, educational facilities and five-star luxury hotels.

After four years of construction, slightly delayed due to Covid, SDB will officially open on the 21st of November, in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Designed by Indian architecture firm Morphogenesis, the building’s central axis connects all the offices and provides breakout spaces and green atriums to foster social cohesion and community engagement.

A spokesperson for Morphogenesis said: “The central spine is used for interconnection between towers on every level. The design enhances users’ spatial and transitional experience across the building without highlighting the expanse of the structure.

“The central axis connecting all the offices is designed as an interactive hub comprising of break-out spaces, green atriums and a host of visual experiences.

“These spaces have been designed to foster social cohesion and community engagement.”
