Legacy sequel Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has now premiered in LA, and further reviews and reactions for the follow-up have now come flooding in. And they range from dazzling praise to a major misfire. Since debuting at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, the response to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has been decidedly mixed, so let’s wade into these latest reactions to Harrison Ford’s last ride…
We begin with MovieWeb’s own David Reddish, who heaps praise on Harrison Ford’s return saying, “There’s only one Harrison Ford, and there’s only one Indiana Jones. Dial of Destiny knows as much, and treats both star and character with proper respect,” and calls Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny “a terrific send-off.”
“Here, one last time, is a great Indiana Jones adventure, a movie true to the legacy of the series, and one that tells an original story without relying on fan service to mask a lack of creativity.”
We leap to the other end of the spectrum with Fred Topel of United Press International, who calls Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny the “worst” installment in the beloved franchise.
“Every action sequence loses the feeling of adventure when it includes shots that look like the stars were added to them later.”
Yahoo’s Tom Butler however found a lot to like the Indiana Jones sequel, awarding the movie a promising 4/5 and saying…
“Dial of Destiny is a blast from the past, so enjoy Harrison Ford’s performance as one of cinema’s greatest icons, backed by John Williams’ legendary theme on the big screen, while you still can.”
Further Reactions to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Are Equally Mixed
Further reactions following the U.S. premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, are equally mixed, with critics calling the sequel “underwhelming,” “a dud,” and “a crashing bore.”
But with the negatives come several positives, making it near-impossible to know how Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will fare when it hits theaters at the end of this month.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will drop audiences in 1969 and finds American archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones living against the backdrop of the Space Race. Jones is uneasy over the fact that the U.S. government has recruited former Nazis to help beat the Soviet Union in the competition to make it to space. His goddaughter, Helena Shaw, accompanies him on his journey. Meanwhile, Jürgen Voller, a NASA member and ex-Nazi involved with the moon-landing program, wishes to make the world into a better place as he sees fit.
Directed by James Mangold, who has co-written the sequel alongside Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and David Koepp, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny stars Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on June 30, 2023.
