Indiana Jones loses eye in old age and fans wonder if it’ll happen in new movie

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set in 1969 when Indy, played by the 80-year-old Harrison Ford, is supposed to be around 70.

The upcoming blockbuster is the fifth and final outing in the franchise, but did you know we’ve seen Indy when he’s even older?

Back in the early 1990s, the Young Indiana Jones TV show aired starring Sean Patrick Flannery.

The actor portrayed Indy during his service in the First World War and its aftermath ahead of the 1930s set original trilogy of movies.

But the Young Indy series was also bookended with scenes set in the then present-day setting of 1992-1993.

For these scenes, the archaeologist adventurer was portrayed aged 93-94 by George Hall.

An elderly man at this point, Indiana Jones still wore his famous fedora hat, but he also had a big scar over his right eye which was covered by an eye patch.

As for how and when Indy lost his right eye in the franchise’s canon is anyone’s guess. However, we know he must have lost it at some point between 1969 and 1992 since he has both in the trailer for Dial of Destiny.

So if Lucasfilm wants to maintain their canon, Indy either needs to lose his right eye in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, or it’s hypothetical that it goes at some point in the 1970s or 1980s.

Although, there’s always the possibility that the physical disfigurement is retconned since the Young Indiana Jones show was so long ago. After all, they did edit out Hall’s scenes in the re-released film versions of those stories when they hit VHS back in the day.

Fans will have to wait and see the new movie to find out if Indy’s eye remains intact.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hits UK cinemas on June 28, 2023.
