Commonwealth Games 2022 champion Sen, a world championship bronze medallist and ranked 20th in the world, took just 32 minutes to quell the challenge of world no.11 over Zii Jia Lee of Malaysia 21-17 21-13.

Srikanth, a former world championship silvrer medallist, on the other hand, beat Guang Zu Lu of China 21-13 21-19 in the opening round match that lasted for 46 minutes.

The win helped Srikanth, ranked 22nd, to continue his dominance over world no.13 Lu, extending his head-to-head record against the Chinese to 5-0. But it will be curtains for either Lakshya or Srikanth in the next round as they will take on each other.

Another Indian in men’s singles action, Priyanshu Rajawat received a walkover from one of the top seeds, Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand to seal his place in the next round. He is next set to face local shuttler Anthony Sinisuka Ginting on Thursday (June 15).

However, it was curtains for young Indian female shuttler Aakarshi Kashyap as she crashed out in the opening round of women’s singles. Kashyap was no match for second seed An Se young of Korea, losing 10-21 4-21.

Earlier on Tuesday (June 13), HS Prannoy, PV Sindhu as well as top doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty progressed to the second round of their respective events.

Malaysia Masters winner Prannoy got past Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto by straight games in men’s singles, while two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu saw off recent nemesis in Gregoria Mariska Tunjung to set up a second round match with Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei.

Satwik-Chirag defeated French pair Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov in straight games. However, it was end of the road in the first round for doubles pairs Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand and Dhruv Kapila-MR Arjun pairs as they suffered defeats in the opening round matches.
