Indonesia Open 2023: Satwik-Chirag pair & Prannoy reach semifinals; Srikanth crashes out

The Asian champions defeated world no. 1 home-favourite men’s doubles duo of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia 21-13, 21-13 in quarterfinals to enter last-4. The quarterfinal match lasted for just 41 minutes.

The Indian doubles pair will next face the winner of the quarterfinal between Kang Min Hyuk-Seo Seung Jae of Korea and Indonesian pair of Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin.

Later, Malaysia Masters champion HS Prannoy defeated Japan’s Kodai Naraoka via straight games to reach the men’s singles semifinal. The seventh seeded Indian beat the third seeded Japanese shuttler 21-18, 21-16 in the last 8 match that lasted for 55 minutes.

Prannoy will next face the winner of the quarterfinal between top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and the fifth seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the last four match on Saturday (June 17).

While the doubles pair and Prannoy progressed, it was the end of the road for Kidambi Srikanth in men’s singles event as the World Championship silver medallist went down fighting to China’s Li Shi Feng in the quarterfinals.

The Indian shuttler, who fought back from a game down to take the quarterfinal match into the decider, suffered a 14-21, 21-14, 12-21 loss to the Chinese shuttler in the last eight match that lasted for an hour and nine minutes.

Earlier on Thursday (June 15), two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu crashed out following a 18-21, 16-21 straight games loss to Chinese Taipei’s third seeded Tai Tzu Ying in the second round.

Priyanshu Rajawat, on the other hand, suffered a loss to Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting by a scoreline of 22-20, 15-21, 15-21 in a tightly contested round of 16 men’s singles match.

Meanwhile, the likes of Lakshya Sen, Akarshi Kashyap as well as doubles pairs of Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand and Dhruv Kapila-MR Arjun crashed out in the opening round on the first two days of the tournament.
