Prannoy progressed to the semi-final after straight games win against third seeded Kodai Naraoka of Japan in the quarterfinal on Friday (June 16). The Indian shuttler eased past the Japanese by a scoreline of 21-18, 21-16 in the last 8 match that lasted for 55 minutes on Court 2.
In the earlier rounds, the Malaysia Masters champion beat Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto by a scoreline of 21-16, 21-14 in the tournament opener before he defeated NG Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong in straight games 21-18, 21-16 in the second round.
Axelsen, on the other hand, eased past Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien-chen in the other quarter-final to reach semi-final. The Dane defeated the fifth-seeded Chinese Taipei opponent 21-5, 21-19 in the last eight match that lasted for 39 minutes on Court 1.
Earlier, the Olympic champion breezed past Weng Hong Yang of China in the first round via straight games 21-12, 21-8 before easing past Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu Wei in the second round by a scoreline of 21-12, 21-9.
Now, Prannoy will face an opponent he has met seven times so far in the form of Viktor Axelsen. The Dane hold the advantage over the Indian 5-2 in the head-to-head battles, but Prannoy has beaten Axelsen in the recent two meetings.
