inFAMOUS And Sly Cooper Shelved For Now, Sucker Punch Confirms

Sucker Punch Productions, one of PlayStation’s various first-party studios has stated via a blog post on their website, that they currently have no plans to revisit their inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper franchises, as they are fully focused on another future project.

They go as far as to say that no other studio is working on those franchises either and affirms verbatim that “there are no inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper games in development.” They were, however, nice enough to say that they’d “never say never to re-opening those doors down the road.”

Sucker Punch Productions has been owned by PlayStation since 2013, but they’d worked with them in a second-party capacity long before that, specifically on the Sly Cooper games. The first Sly Cooper game dropped on PlayStation 2 in 2002, and they proceeded to develop a trilogy that concluded in 2005. It is widely considered one of the classic series of the era, and many see the character as an important PlayStation mascot, albeit a smaller one. The games had a fun mix of platforming and stealth gameplay, and a lot of fans were hoping the series would make a comeback, much like Ratchet & Clank has.

Throughout the past few months, several rumors and reports had made the rounds suggesting that titles for both series were quietly in development. One was simply a tweet by an anonymous leaker, but more recently, there were also job listings by Sucker Punch themselves, which had fans certain Sly Cooper was being hinted at; it’s clear such was not the case.

Sucker Punch’s recent blog post went on to say that they’ll be performing maintenance on inFAMOUS 2 UGC (user-generated-content) servers, and are working to put Cole’s Legacy DLC on the PSN store. They ended the post by writing, “We’re not ready to talk about whatever might be next, but we hope you’ll keep following us whenever we’re ready to share more.”

Despite Sucker Punch’s iconic beginnings, they’re likely now better known for their 2020 open-world samurai/ninja game, Ghost of Tsushima. This game had positive chatter going into it, but it still blew expectations out of the water, performing great both critically and commercially. This recent post narrows down their next game to either a Ghost of Tsushima sequel, or a completely new IP. Given PlayStation’s history of going for sequels after successful games, like with The Last of Us, God of War, and Horizon, it’s hard to bet on them changing their strategy now.
