King Charles is said to be immensely fond of the rolling landscapes and babbling streams the Highlands offers in spades, and he has spent much of his free time living in Scotland. Charles frequently visited Balmoral Castle, the late Queen’s Scottish home, during his time as Prince of Wales, but he also has his own private bolthole nearby called Birkhall. As Balmoral was passed to the Queen upon King George VI’s death, it stands to reason Charles has inherited Balmoral as the new monarch.
Where is Birkhall?
Birkhall makes up 52,000 acres on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire, a short distance away from the Balmoral Estate.
The River Muick streams alongside Birkhall, making it a great spot for fishing and enjoying the natural landscape.
While the building’s history stems back to the 18th century, it was first acquired by the Royal Family in the 19th century.

The late Queen offered a glimpse inside a living room at Balmoral when she welcomed the newly-appointed Prime Minister Liz Truss upon her winning of the Conservative Party leadership.
White walls were decorated ornately with gold framed mirrors, while grand clocks and candelabras adorned a roaring fireplace.
Floral lamps and vases full of pink flowers were on full display, and mint green sofas sat flanked by antique side tables.
The Queen died at Balmoral on September 8, 2022, and it was from here that her coffin procession to Edinburgh and ultimately St George’s Chapel in Windsor began.
Balmoral was hugely popular with the late Queen and with the many members of the Royal Family who made the trip up to visit her there.
The late Queen’s granddaughter Princess Eugenie said in the ITV documentary Our Queen at 90: “Walks, picnics, dogs – a lot of dogs, there’s always dogs – and people coming in and out all the time.
“It’s a lovely base for granny and grandpa, for us to come and see them up there; where you just have room to breathe and run.”
The Queen spent the summers of her reign at Balmoral, and parts of the property are open to visitors on certain days of the year.
