A POPULAR area in Glasgow’s southside has been named one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world.
Shawlands beat competition from Silver Lake in LA and Sants in Barcelona to come in 11th place in Time Out‘s 51 coolest neighbourhoods list 2022.
Four other areas in the UK were named on the list as well – Cliftonville in Margate, Walthamstow in North East London, The Northern Quarter in Manchester and Kelham Island in Sheffield.
Malcolm Jack, a contributor at Time Out, said the Shawlands neighbourhood “keeps Glasgow braw” and “is the bustling nexus point” of the city below the Clyde.
And mentioned the recently refurbished Burrell Collection – a nod towards the great art in the area.
The area has great parks and event spaces with Pollok Park getting a shout out in the magazine where visitors can take a selfie with the Highland Cow.
If you are visiting the area, the piece talks about catching a gig at boho vegan eatery and arts space The Glad Café.
And if you are planning a trip then the week-long Southside Fringe takes place each May for up-and-coming performers and artists.
The Fringe also hosts a monthly Maker’s Fair at Shawlands Arcade.
Coffee shops and eateries also got a mention with Deanston Bakery, Frankie and Julie’s Kopitiam getting name checked.
He said: “The neighbouring areas of Langside, Strathbungo and Govanhill have all played their part in the Southside’s rise to eclipse the West End as the city’s best area to socialise and live in recent years – but Shawlands is the bustling nexus point of Glasgow below the Clyde.
“The internationally renowned Burrell Collection has recently had a multimillion-pound refurb, and it’s surrounded by buzzy independent local businesses – such as French-Japanese patisserie and design shop Godshot Studio – on the main artery of Pollokshaws Road, before it bisects with Kilmarnock Road in front of a beautiful Flatiron Building-esque sandstone tenement block.
“But explore the side streets too for delightful plant-based lattes and flat whites at Frankie, or superior sourdough from Deanston Bakery.”
Locals across the neighbourhood have been reacting to their home being named in the list.
Yuriy Kachak, 39, owner of Deanston Bakery told the Glasgow Times: “Shawlands is one of the friendliest neighbourhoods in the world. There is so much community spirit here. People really support locals just because they want them to stick around.
“Times are difficult right now, so having the support of customers is very important so in that sense, we are very lucky to be in Shawlands.”
David Simister, 30, who lives in Shawlands, said: “I think Shawlands being voted as one of the coolest places in the world is actually very true.
“Everything is on your doorstep and the people are friendly, the food is good and the drink is good. It’s good Scottish vibes.”
In 2020, Dennistoun was named in the top 10 of the coolest neighbourhoods list.
Since 2018, the annual list has been collated from the opinions of locals via the annual Time Out Index survey of over global city residents.
And for the fifth year running, Time Out combined their views with expert input from a global network of local editors and writers.
Colonia Americana in Guadalajara, Mexico bagged top spot.
