Director James Wan knows a thing or two about horror franchises, with the filmmaker planning to expand his already hugely successful Insidious series into spinoffs. Speaking with Screen Rant, Wan teased development on Thread: An Insidious Tale, revealing that it will take some inspiration from one of his other successful franchises, The Conjuring, using the mysteries of the astral plane The Further to tell new, no doubt terrifying, stories.
“Yeah, Thread basically kind of takes off from the world of The Further in the same way that when I look at my Conjuring films, I go, “Hey, the Warrens have a haunted museum, there’s so many different haunted artifacts that we can kind of spin off stories from,” and Thread really is something in that same spirit. Leigh and I had kind of built this place called The Further in the Insidious world, and we just felt like there were many stories within that we can tell, and this is one of the potential stories that we’re hoping to kind of get out there with the spinoff.”
Producer and CEO of Blumhouse Productions, Jason Blum, went on to reveal that Thread: An Insidious Tale is now “definitely being talked about,” so expect a lot more journeys to The Further beyond just the misadventures of the Lambert family.
Announced last year, Thread: An Insidious Tale is all set to be written and directed by Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater, making the Insidious spinoff his directorial debut. Eternals actor Kumail Nanjiani and This Is Us star Mandy Moore will lead the spinoff, which will reportedly center on a husband and wife who attempt to use dark magic to travel back in time bad prevent the death of their daughter.
Audinces Will First Return to The Further in Insidious: The Red Door
Before any spinoffs, audiences will first return to The Further in the upcoming sequel, Insidious: The Red Door. Set ten years after the end of previous first two films, 2010’s Insidious and 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2, Insidious: The Red Door finds Josh Lambert heading east to drop his son Dalton off at an idyllic, ivy-league university. However, Dalton’s college dream becomes a nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both. To end the haunting and to put the demons to rest once and for all, Josh and Dalton must return once again to the Further in order to stop the Lambert nightmare for good.
Directed by Patrick Wilson in his directorial debut, and from a screenplay written by Scott Teems, the fifth outing in the hugely successful horror franchise will reunite the likes of Patrick Wilson as Josh Lambert, Rose Byrne as Renai Lambert, Ty Simpkins as Dalton Lambert, and Andrew Astor as Foster Lambert. The likes of Peter Dager, Jarquez McClendon, Sinclair Daniel, and Hiam Abbass will also feature in Insidious: The Red Door.
Insidious: The Red Door is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 7, 2023, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
