The Red Devils have identified the Cameroon international as their key target as they look for a new goalkeeper and put in a bid of £34.4m, with add-ons which could see the deal reach £38.5m, which was rejected, but returned with an offer of £39m.
However, Inter want closer to £45m for the 27-year-old and he Serie A side are not ready to accept the second bid from Old Trafford.
‘As of today, the proposals are not at the level we expected,’ said Ausilio.
‘In this moment he’s our goalkeeper and Andre is key player for us — we’d like to keep him, then we’ll see what happens. We wait for him on 13 July for pre-season.’
Inter vice-president, Javier Zanetti, added on the situation: ‘When you have important players it’s normal that there are requests, but for now Onana is one of our players and we hope to keep all the important ones.
‘The transfer market has just begun, anything can change, but Inter have always shown themselves at the top when building important teams.’
While there is not a great deal between the most recent bid from the Red Devils and the Inter Milan asking price, Manchester United are considering cheaper options than the former Ajax star.
Brighton’s Robert Sanchez and Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp are candidates, as is Brentford’s David Raya, although he will likely cost as much as Onana.
