They had one lead, and it was a dud.

Investigators trying to solve the murder of four University of Idaho students had come up with precious little until a promising lead emerged. A white Hyundai had been identified as potentially linked to the murders.

The car was spotted about 1,200 kilometres from the crime scene.

But police said this week, “Investigators are aware of a Hyundai Elantra located in Eugene, Oregon and have spoken with the owner. The vehicle was involved in a collision and subsequently impounded.

“The vehicle is registered out of Colorado and the female owner is not believed to have any relation to any property in Moscow, Idaho or the ongoing murder investigations. The public is asked to stop contacting the owner.”

Photos of the car had shown its license plate had been ripped off and the front of it was severely damaged.

Kaylee Goncalves, Maddie Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle were all stabbed in their sleep on Nov. 13.

The police have yet to name any suspects.

Another development was that the lead investigator on the case was revealed to only have two years of experience.
