Take for example, openers Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devon Conway did wonderfully in the just-concluded season but only two from the lot can be picked for the position.
MyKhel has done its best to pick the ‘Best IPL 2023 11’. Have a look.
Yashasvi Jaiswal: Leaving out the Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener from the ‘IPL 2023 Best 11’ would be a crime. The youngest Indian uncapped batter to score 600-plus runs in the season, Jaiswal finished the IPL 2023 with 625 runs in 14 matches at an average of 48.07 and a strike rate of 163.61.
The southpaw hit five fifties and one hundred. On one occasion, he finished with 98 unbeaten runs against KKR. He looked set to cross the 700-run mark but unfortunately RR failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Shubman Gill: Three hundreds and four fifties saw Shubman Gill finish the season as the leading run-scorer. He scored 890 runs in 17 matches at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80.
The 23-year-old Gujarat Titans (GT) opener registered scores of 39, 129, 42, 104* and 101 in his last five innings. He fell 10 runs short of becoming only the second batter after Virat Kohli to score 900 or more runs in a single IPL season.
Suryakumar Yadav (C): The Mumbai Indians (MI) star snuggled in the first few matches before getting back into his elements. The 32-year-old finished the IPL 2023 season with 511 runs in 14 matches at an average of 42.58 and a strike rate of 185.14.
He hit one hundred and four fifties during the period. His presence at number three ensures an attacking approach for a longer duration. A slump in run rate can also be avoided in case an opener departs early.
Heinrich Klaasen (WK): The South Africa was highly impressive in the league stage and therefore makes entry as first overseas star in Mykhel’s ‘IPL 2023 Best 11’. In 12 matches, he scored 448 runs at an average of 49.77 and a strike rate of 177.07.
He delivered his best when the team needed it. In fact, the wicketkeeper-batter was the only one from SRH who stood up and fought. Promoted at number four against RCB, Klaasen slammed 104 runs off 51 balls.
Rinku Singh: The KKR batter has been around for a while but IPL 2023 saw his transformation from a player to a superstar. Winning matches with fours and sixes have made him a household name.
What stood out was Rinku’s consistency and ability to soak intense pressure time and again. In the league stage, he scored 474 runs in 14 matches at an average of 59.25 and a strike rate of 149.52.
Nicholas Pooran: The West Indies star has been brutal in slog overs and helped Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) finish on high notes time and again. The league stage saw him score 358 runs in 14 matches at an average of 32.54 and a strike rate of 173.78.
Pooran is the second overseas star in MyKhel’s ‘IPL 2023 Combine XI’ of the tournament.
Ravindra Jadeja: With 10 runs required off two balls in the IPL 2023. the star all-rounder smashed a six and four to hand his team their fifth IPL title. It’s a no-brainer that Jadeja walks in the team as the leading spin-bowling all-rounder.
The IPL 2023 season saw him pick 20 wickets at an average of 21.55 and an economy rate of 7.56. With the bat, the southpaw all-rounder did not get many chances to bat long but he managed to score 190 runs at an average of 23.75 and a strike rate of 142.85.
Rashid Khan: GT’s Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid finished the sixteenth edition of the IPL as the joint-highest wicket-taker. In 17 matches, he picked 27 wickets at an average of 20.44 and an economy rate of 8.23. In nine innings with the bat, he stayed unbeaten five times and scored 130 runs at an average of 32.50 and a strike rate of 216.66.
Mohammed Shami: The Indian superstar would lead the pace attack in the ‘IPL 2023 Best 11’ from the league stage of the tournament. Shami is a legit match-winner.
He won the Purple Cap for taking highest wickets in the IPL 2023. He picked 28 wickets at an average of 18.64 and an economy rate of 8.03.
IPL 2023 Combine XI
Mohammed Siraj: The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pacer was electric in the powerplay overs. Overall, he picked 19 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 19.73 and an economy rate of 7.50.
Mohit Sharma: The veteran pacer almost handed GT their second consecutive IPL title, leaking just three runs in the first four balls while defending 13 in the final over. Jadeja spoiled his part in the end but that does not at all take away anything from the Haryana pacer.
A net bowler for GT last year, Mohit finished the season with 27 wickets at an average of 13.37 and an economy rate of 8.17. His average is best among bowlers with 12 or more wickets in the season.
Mohit, the joint-highest wicket-taker of the season alongside Rashid Khan, was also one of the only four bowlers who picked a five-fer this year
IPL 2023 Best XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Rinku Singh, Heincrich Klaasen (wk), Nicholas Pooran, Ravindra Jadeja, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Mohit Sharma
Note: Gaikwad, Conway, Ashwin, Chahal, Virat Kohli, Shivam Dube, Cameron Green, Varun Chakravarthy, Axar Patel, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis were in contention for a slot in middle-order. MS Dhoni was overlooked as captain to increase the batting depth.
