IPL 2023: Decibel level of MS Dhoni chants higher than aircraft noise, stunning data emerges

According to Medical experts a whisper is about 30 decibels, regular talk is about 60 decibels, and it is about 95 decibels for a motorcycle engine to run. Noise over 70 decibels can start to damage hearing over a sustained period of time. Loud noise above 120 decibels will damage ears instantly.

The immediate conclusion is that sound over 80 decibels isn’t recommended and is harmful for human ears. However, the roar for Thala Dhoni crossed all the limits and his fans would be deeply hurt if someone termed their passionate cheering and chanting as some unhealthy noise.

While the loudest cheering for Dhoni came quite naturally at Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) home ground MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk), the decibel levels touched 117 in Lucknow and Delhi.

“112. 120. 117. 115. 115. 112. 112. 112. 117. 112. 117. 120. 115. 120,” are the decibel levels recorded as Dhoni walked out in the ground on different occasions during the IPL 2023.

“Wherever MS Dhoni travelled, he received support. It was because of the fans’ love for MS Dhoni. This generation has witnessed Ms Dhoni taking India to greater heights. fans don’t come out to support MSD and they cheer him and CSK’s yellow,” Harbhajan Singh on the sea of yellow,” Harbhajan Singh said on Star Sports on Sunday.

Earlier, Dhoni’s CSK teammate and opener Devon Conway had expressed amazement at the kind of reception the former India captain gets, especially at the Chepauk.

“It was special to see MS walk out of the Chepauk stadium. You hear many stories about the crowd going crazy when he walks out to bat. And experiencing that yesterday firsthand, being there was special. I mean, it was so loud I literally couldn’t hear myself,” CSK opener Conway had said after Dhoni’s unbeaten 17-ball 32 against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 12.

The on-air commentators have also time and again been left awestruck by the reception Dhoni has been getting throughout the season. On one occasion during his post match interaction with the broadcasters, Dhoni himself had to turn up the volume of the speaker to communicate with Simon Doull who was in the studio.

Loud cheers for Dhoni at toss have also made it very tough for the presenters to communicate with the 41-year-old talismanic captain. Dhoni has been overwhelmed by the reception he has been getting throughout the country.

“I will just say thanks for the support, they came in big numbers. Most of these guys will come in a KKR jersey next time. They are trying to give me a farewell, so thanks a lot to the crowd,” Dhoni had said after CSK’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens.

IPL returned to its traditional home and away for the first time after Covid-19 pandemic. Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020 and due to Covid-enforced closed door matches, the fans had missed watching Dhoni from the close quarters of the stadium.

Even though Dhoni has refrained from giving away anything on his IPL retirement plans, it is being widely anticipated that the IPL 2023 is his last season as a player. He has led CSK to the final and would be aiming to win his fifth IPL trophy with them on Sunday, May 28 against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
