IPL 2023: Prabhsimran Singh first Punjab Kings player to score hundred since rechristening of team in 2021

The inning from the 22-year-old consisted of 10 fours and six sixes. The right-hander scored 27 runs off his first 31 balls but accelerated beautifully in the second-half of his innings to complete a 61-ball hundred – his maiden in the IPL.

Prabhsimran was lauded by his teammates who came rushing out in the dressing room balcony and stood from their seats in the dugout to acknowledge the special effort. The batter took a moment out to fold his hands and thank the almighty.

Notably, Kings XI Punjab was rechristened to Punjab Kings (PBKS) with a new team logo ahead of the IPL 2021. No PBKS batter hit a hundred in IPL 2021. Mayank Agarwal was the last batter from the team to score a hundred.

He smashed it against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Sharjah in IPL 2020. KL Rahul slammed a hundred in the same year for Punjab Kings (then known as Kings XI Punjab). Shaun Marsh was the first batter to score an IPL hundred for the Mohali-based franchise in IPL 2008 – the inaugural edition.

The hundred from Prabhsimran came at a right time for Punjab as they lost three wickets inside the powerplay. The youngster stitched a 72-run partnership off 54 balls with Sam Curran (20 off 24) – the second-highest run-scorer for PBKS in the match.

He later forged a crucial 13-ball 25-run partnership with Shahrukh Khan for the sixth wicket. The anchor innings from Prabhsimran propelled the visitors to 167/7 in 20 overs against DC.

Punjab Kings, who have 10 points from 11 matches, need to win each of their remaining three matches to fancy a chance to qualify for the playoffs. They are currently placed eighth in the IPL 2023 points table.
