IPL 2023 Records Most Captains in a season: Complete List of Skippers

IPL 2023 saw the most number of captains representing the teams, as there have been 16 captains across the 10 teams this season. This is a tournament record, as it went past the IPL 2013 season, in which 15 captains were used.

16 captains have represented the 10 franchises this year. There have been forced changes while some teams have gone on with a rotational captain policy. Royal Challengers Bangalore made Virat Kohli captain for a couple of matches, whereas Suryakumar Yadav also captained the Mumbai Indians.

Apart from this, injuries and unavailability have also brought in acting captains for some franchises. Krunal Pandya is leading Lucknow Super Giants after KL Rahul’s injury, and the same has happened with Punjab Kings, when Sam Curran led them in Shikhar Dhawan’s absence.

MS Dhoni (CSK), Hardik Pandya (GT), Shikhar Dhawan (PBKS), Nitish Rana (KKR), Rohit Sharma (MI), Faf du Plessis (RCB), Aiden Markram (SRH), David Warner (DC), Sanju Samson (RR), KL Rahul (LSG)

Acting Captains who have represented teams in IPL 2023-

Krunal Pandya (LSG), Virat Kohli (RCB), Suryakumar Yadav (MI), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (SRH), Sam Curran (PBKS), Rashid Khan (GT)

Krunal Pandya has been leading LSG in the last few matches, and registered his first victory as captain in the last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar led SRH in their first match as Aiden Markram was yet to reach India.

Sam Curran and Rashid Khan led PBKS and GT respectively in the absences of Shikhar Dhawan and Hardik Pandya.

Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav took the captainship responsibility while fielding as Faf du Plessis and Rohit Sharma were being used as Impact Players by RCB and MI respectively.

IPL 2018 saw the least number of Captains

The IPL 2018 season saw the least number of captains. Although it was an 8-team tournament, only 9 skippers led the teams that season.

Apart from the eight regular skippers, Shreyas Iyer was the only extra captain who took over the Delhi Capitals leadership from Gautam Gambhir mid-season in that year.
