Sunrisers were well on course in the run chase of 172 with 48 needed off 36 balls until Shardul Thakur removed Heinrich Klaasen (34 off 20 balls) in the first delivery of the fifteenth over and Vaibhav Arora dismissed skipper Aiden Markram (41 off 40 balls) in the 17th over.
Player of the match, Varun Chakaravarthy then bowled the vital final over in which SRH needed 9 to win, but the mystery spinner conceded just three runs and removed a dangerous Abdul Samad (21 off 18 balls) in the testing over to seal the win for KKR.
SRH failed to complete the chase, finishing at 166/8 in 20 overs. Both teams remain in the same position as KKR secured their fourth win in 10 matches, while SRH suffered their sixth defeat in nine matches.
Thakur (2/23) and Vaibhav (2/32) impressed KKR with their bowling. Andre Russell, Anukul Roy, Chakaravarthy and Harshit Rana got a wicket each. For SRH, Rahul Tripathai also contributed with 20 off 9 balls.
Earlier, Nitish Rana’s 42 off 31 balls and Rinku Singh’s 46 off 35 balls helped Kolkata Knight Riders reach a respectable total of 171/9. The KKR pair of Rana and Rinku came together at the crease at a time when the team was struggling at 49 for three at the end of powerplay.
But by the time Rana departed in the 12th over, his 31-ball 42 studded with three fours and an equal number of maximums had put the team on course to a fighting total.
While wickets continued to fall at the other end, with West Indians Andre Russell and Sunil Narine hardly making an impact, Rinku (46 off 35 balls) curbed his natural instinct and played patiently to give the side a decent total to defend.
For SRH, Marco Jansen (2 for 24) and T Natarajan (2 for 30) were the pick of the bowlers, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mayank Markande, Aiden Markram and Kartik Tyagi took a wicket each.
