The 38-year-old last played a Test match in December 2021 before being dropped to make space for youngsters Rishabh Pant and KS Bharat in the main squad. The batting prowess of Pant and his several match-winning knocks in overseas conditions also cost Saha his place.
“The team management had told me that I would not be considered henceforth. I could not tell this so long as I was part of the India team setup. Even coach Rahul Dravid suggested that I think about taking retirement,” Saha had told last year.
Head coach Dravid had later said that he wasn’t hurt from comments by Saha, adding that he has “deep respect” for the former Bengal cricketer and that he deserved “honesty and clarity”.
“I’m not hurt at all,” Dravid said. “I have a deep respect for Wriddhiman Saha and his achievements and contributions to Indian cricket. My conversation with him actually came from that place, from my respect for him. He deserved honesty and clarity. I didn’t want him to hear about it from the media.”
Saha led Tripura in the Ranji Trophy 2022-23 season after leaving his former domestic side Bengal. He scored 313 runs in seven matches at an average of 52.16 in seven matches.
Overall, he has featured in 40 Test matches for India and scored 1353 runs at an average of 29.41. He has three hundreds and six Test fifties to his name. The right-hander hasn’t played any Test match in England till date.
