BAGHDAD, 27th October, 2022 (WAM) – Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani confirmed today that his cabinet had won the confidence of the House of Representatives.
Al-Sudani said in a tweet, which was followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “After relying on God, our cabinet won the confidence of the House of Representatives.”
Sudani’s picks for 21 ministries passed during a parliament vote on the Cabinet. He named the former head of the state-run South Gas Co. (SGC) Hayan Abdul Ghani as oil minister, kept Fuad Hussein as foreign minister for a second term, and Taif Sami as finance minister.
The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) welcomed the confidence-gaining government of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani in the House of Representatives, stressing its readiness to provide support.
The mission said in a statement received by INA, “We welcome the parliament’s granting of confidence to the government of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani, which represents the rapid completion of his cabinet formation.”
The statement added, “The new government faces many serious challenges that require decisive action, and that this will include addressing systemic corruption in Iraq, implementing much-needed reforms, providing appropriate services to all citizens, diversifying the economy, encouraging the meaningful participation of women and youth, and addressing the effects of climate change.” Ending impunity, holding perpetrators accountable and reining in armed non-state actors, while extending state authority.”
