A live-action Barbie movie has been on the cards for a very long time. Having gone through multiple writers, directors and even stars, the film finally settled on the unlikely combination of Greta Gerwig as director, Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. A trio of Oscar nominees taking on a movie about the most famous doll in the world seemed like the most unlikely combination ever put together in cinema, and considering the previous work of Gerwig, even more so.
Trailers for the movie seemed to get a muted response from many people, and it was hard to work out exactly who the movie was aimed at – especially with the bold announcement that if you hate Barbie, or love Barbie, the movie is for you. However, it seems that the first reactions have put to rest the biggest question about Barbie – is the movie any good? Well, if Aqua want fans to go party with Barbie, it looks like the wish has been granted, as the initial comments on the movie have suggested it is not only good, but Oscar-worthy itself.
Taking a lot of praise is Ryan Gosling, who has been specifically noted by many of the early comments as can be seen in the posts below from Twitter users.
Can Barbie Save The 2023 Summer Box Office?
As part of a summer movie line up that contains Marvel movies, DC movies, Harrison Ford’s final Indiana Jones outing and many other potentially huge blockbusters, the idea that Barbie could end up being one of the biggest on the list was pretty unthinkable at the start of the year. Although there are many parent who will not know exactly what kind of meta, social commentary-filled movie they are taking their tiny tots into, Barbie is looking at having one of the highest opening weekend hauls of the year. Currently projected to hit around $80 million domestically, Barbie will easily open higher than Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Flash, Fast X and, who knows, it could even beat Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning which arrives this weekend.
The main thing to take away from this is that Barbie has a real chance of being one of the biggest movies of the year, something that is no mean feat at the moment. In a year when almost every sure success had turned into a spluttering misfire, if Barbie can secure a good opening weekend, and continue to receive the same kind of praise that these first reactions have brought, then the movie could quite easily find itself soaring up the chart of the year’s highest grossing movies.
Expect to hear more about the incoming arrival of Barbie in the coming week as Gosling, Robbie and other members of the stacked cast head out to promote the movie ahead of next weekend’s release. That cast includes Kate McKinnon, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, John Cena, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, and Dame Helen Mirren.
Barbie is released worldwide on July 21.
