Entertainment Tonight is reporting that Dakota Johnson has reportedly been lined up to play the part of ‘Madame Web’ in an upcoming Sony Pictures Film.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, it’s believed the actor is in talks to play the lead role, which is being directed by British director and writer, S.J. Clarkson.
Clarkson has previously been at the helm of some episodes of Jessica Jones and The Defenders, both of which were part of a Marvel-Netflix series, as well as directing an episode of Succession and Netflix’s upcoming Anatomy of a Scandal.
Dakota’s character, Madame Web, was first introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man in the 1980s, and according to The Hollywood reporter, she is “a clairvoyant mutant who specialises in predicting the future of spider-themed superheroes, having mentored not only Peter Parker’s alter ego, but also multiple generations of heroes calling themselves Spider-Woman. Traditionally depicted as a blind, paralysed old woman, she is surrounded by a web-like machine necessary to keep her alive, meaning that she stays away from direct conflict, and rather sends others on missions.”
Madame Web will be the next instalment in Sony’s growing roster of spidey spin-offs, including last year’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage and the most recent, Spider-Man: No Way Home (which is said to have grossed a seriously impressive $1.74bn globally, the highest in Sony history).
Naturally, fans are excited at the prospect of Dakota joining the Marvel family, with one saying “After this past week of @sundancefest seeing her in #ChaChaRealSmooth and Am I OK? I’m here for anything she does.”
Another added that it was “wonderful news” but @xinikiareads put it best when she tweeted: “Marvel. Dakota Johnson. Madame Web. that’s it, that’s the tweet.”

It’s already set to be a pretty big year for Dakota too, having just starred in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter, alongside Olivia Colman, plus she’s also due to appear in Carrie Cracknell’s Netflix adaptation of Persuasion by Jane Austen, which will premiere later this year. There really is no stopping her and we love to see it.
