Love is difficult to navigate as it is, and now with easy swiping on dating apps, the dating language keeps evolving too. Adding more complications to the already complex dating lives and vocabulary of youngsters is the term explori-dating.
“Explori-dating seems to be a combination of ‘exploring’ and ‘dating’ which signifies that dating apps have given the young generation a platform to understand what works out well for them and what doesn’t. They want to explore the aspects wherein they can ‘vibe’ with a probable romantic interest and which ones are a complete deal breaker,” says psychologist Kanika Khosla.
It’s important to note that actual romantic chemistry is hard to predict; it can crackle between two people with nothing in common and fail to materialise in what looks on paper like a perfect match. “The pandemic has redefined dating rules. The past year has been one of reflection for singles to identify priorities. According to our research, 48% of single Indians question what their ‘type’ even is. 55% of daters on our app in India described their approach to dating as exploratory,” said Shahzeen Shivdasani,Bumble India’s relationship expert.
Anmol Arora, a 21-year-old college student, says, “The pandemic gave us a lot of time to understand ourselves and our needs. We are still figuring out what we want exactly and this term aptly defines most of our love lives.”
The future of love?
Some experts feel explori-dating allows you ample room to make choices that matter in the long run. “The youth is asking the right questions, and having deeper conversations to connect with people with same emotional and mental wavelength. The future is a reassertion of shared interests as well as a rejection of compromise in the approach towards finding life partners,” says Pawan Gupta, CEO and founder, Betterhalf.ai.
The concept of explori-dating is not only giving the current generation an opportunity to figure out who they would rather want to be with but also allows them to understand themselves better.
Khosla opines, “With girls and boys being equally independent and ambitious, it becomes all the more important to know what one wants from a relationship, how much either partner is willing to compromise and to what extent the relationship will be a mutually beneficial one.”
