Is John Calipari moving to lure in-state 4-star to Kentucky?

Travis Perry is the top-ranked recruit from Kentucky in the 2024 recruiting class, but is John Calipari now moving to bring him to the Wildcats?

We all know the plight of Kentucky basketball right now as head coach John Calipari tries to reel together a string of wins to end the regular season for the Wildcats in order to punch their ticket to March Madness. Of course, Calipari is also looking toward the future always. And that means he’s on the recruiting trail.

As has often been the case, Kentucky currently has the No. 1-ranked recruiting class in 2023according to the 247 Sports Composite with four 5-star recruits and one 4-star recruit committed to the Wildcats.

Now it seems like Calipari might be moving in on the top recruit in the Bluegrass State for the 2024 cycle, Travis Perry.

Perry is ranked No. 86 nationally in the 247 Sports Composite and is the No. 13-ranked point guard in the class. However, Kentucky keeping the pipeline of the best in-state talent heading to Lexington and getting Perry might be key to doing that.

Kentucky basketball: John Calipari watches in-state 4-star Travis Perry drop 60

Until recently, the belief seemed to be that Michigan, Ole Miss and Purdue might be the favorites to land a commitment from Perry. However, Calipari and assistant K.T. Turner were recently in attendance to watch Perry play for Lyon County and the guard put on a show.

Perry dropped 61 points in a 114-56 victory with the Kentucky head coach in attendance while also adding double-digit rebounds. The 4-star recruit also knew who was in the building and seemed to appreciate that.

Though out-of-state schools have seemingly had the edge to this point in Perry’s recruitment, Calipari going on the road to watch the guard does speak to an increased level of interest after they offered him on an earlier visit. Now it seems like things might be ramping up, though.

The big question is if the Wildcats’ struggles this season are going to be a hindrance in the recruitment. It hasn’t hurt Calipari yet, to be sure, and if he wants to keep his recruiting prowess going, bringing the in-state prospect to Lexington to keep him in Kentucky would be a massive step.
