Recently, a sculpture having the body of a man and the head of a lion is going viral on social media. Users are claiming that this is the sculpture of Lord Narasimha (Indian Deity) that was found in Germany during an excavation process.
However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. This is not a statue of Lord Narasimha but is known as Lowenmensch or lion man.
What’s The Claim?
Sharing the image, social media users are claiming that “Lord Narasimha’s sculpture was found in Germany. A carbon dating determined that the sculpture is around 40,000 years old. This was the vastness of our culture before history was distorted.”
Fact Check-
A Google Reverse Image Search led us to a website History Information in which we found the image of the same sculpture. According to the website, the name of the sculpture is Lowenmensch. This sculpture was carved on mammoth ivory and was 29.6cm wide, 5.6cm wide, and 5.9cm thick. It was discovered in 1939 in a cave located in Germany.
According to the information provided on the British Museum website, this sculpture is also known as The Lion Man. This sculpture is around 40,000 years old made from mammoth ivory with the head of a cave lion with a partly human body. It was found in Stadel Cave, in southern Germany in 1939. The caves around this area were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2017. The sculpture of The Lion Man was loaned to British Museum by Ulm Museum for the exhibition.
Taking a clue from the above, we looked for the sculpture on the Ulm Museum website. We also found that the image used in the viral post looked as if it was taken from this website. It was mentioned that the sculpture of Lion Man was the largest ivory figure that was excavated in the Lone Valley around 1939. This sculpture was carved from the right tusk of a mammoth during the ice age. The legs and torso are human whereas the head and the paws are of a lion.
Similar images of the Lion Man can also be seen in the Alamy website.
Conclusion:
Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. The viral image is not of Lord Narasimha but a 40,000-year-old sculpture called Lowenmensch or The Lion Man, found during excavation in Germany in 1939.
