An image of a half naked man tied to a pole and being tortured by a British officer has resurfaced again on social media. It was claimed that the man tied to the pole is no other than Bhagat Singh.

It was written with the image that this is a rare image of Bhagat Singh which was never published in any newspaper.

However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. This is not an image of Bhagat Singh being tortured by Britisher.

Fact Check-

A keyword search on Google led us to a tweet by a user in 2018 in which the same image was tweeted, it was mentioned in the tweet that this image was from Kasur, Punjab. This photo was smuggled out of India by a man named Benjamin Horniman in 1920

After this, we searched about Benjamin Horniman. According to a Hindustan Times report, Benjamin Horniman (1873-1948) was a British journalist and editor of Bombay Chronicles in 1919. After the Jalinanwala Bagh massacre, the Bombay Chronicles became one of India’s leading voices for independence. As a result of this, a reporter of Bombay Chronicles was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment and Benjamin was deported back to England.

But while going, Horniman smuggled a few photos of Jalianwala Bagh and other incidents out of India. In the year 1920, his book ‘Amritsar and our duty to India’ was published in which he wrote about the British Brutality towards India.

We looked for the book ‘Amritsar and our duty to India’ on Google. We found the archived version of the entire book. We found the same image on page number 128 of the book. Below the image it was written, “Tied to a ladder. Another picture of an Indian tied to a ladder at Kasur railway station being flogged.”

We also found the biography of Bhagat Singh in which it was mentioned that he was born in a Sikh family on 27 September 1907. At the time of his birth, his father was in prison for the freedom movement. At the age of 13, Bhagat Singh was deeply influenced by Gandhiji. He left his school and studied at National College, Lahore. In 1926, Bhagat Singh founded the ‘Naujavan Bharat Sabha (Youth Society of India) and joined the Hindustan Republican Association.

From this it is clear that when the viral image was published in the book ‘Amritsar and our duty to India’ in 1920, Bhagat Singh was only 13 years old and had not been a part of any freedom movement. Therefore, it cannot be Bhagat Singh in the viral image.

Conclusion:

Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. The man tied to a ladder and flogged by Britisher was not Bhagat Singh but some other freedom fighter.
