Is this humble Freo cafe serving Perth’s best sandwiches?

When did sandwiches go from soggy lunchbox disappointment, to hot property?

On a trip to Melbourne last month, I waited 20 minutes in the rain at a popular sandwich shop and gave into the elements only after realising I was still nowhere near the front of the line.

We’ve seen the recently opened Bagel O’s in Mount Lawley go viral on social media, with hungry diners also lining up for what by all accounts is an excellent bagel.

In Fremantle, Peggy’s has become a go-to sandwich destination, with people going specifically to the port city for their fix.

The goods from the humble, white and blue corner sandwich shop are definitely not the kind of sandwiches you’d chew grumpily while staring wistfully at the lucky kids who got a lunch order.

These are sandwiches worth waiting in the rain for.

Starting with my favourite, the schnitty ($16), which is crispy and juicy chicken cushioned inside a soft sesame roll with lettuce, cheddar cheese and creamy dill mayo. It’s big, it’s messy and it’s delicious.

The egg salad ($14) is an equally hefty sandwich, though this one is a little more difficult to get your mouth around. Despite being packed with plenty of ingredients — including egg salad, tomato, cucumber, pickles, onion, lettuce, cheddar and mayo — it’s lovely, light and fresh.

Chicken salt fries ($7) with special sauce gets a special shout out due to the very decent amount of chicken salt and a creamy sauce so good my mum dipped her finger into it. The speediness of the meals also didn’t go unnoticed — they hit the table within five minutes.

The focaccia on the parm ($16) would be stunning on its own with a bowl of good olive oil, but is even better with the extra crispy stack of fried eggplant, spicy sugo, white onion, lettuce and parmigiano cheese.

The freshness of the ingredients, the perfection of the sauces, the soft and tasty bread and also the cooking of the main ingredients came together to make some of the best sandwiches I’ve had.

THE VERDICT

These sandwiches are definitely worth the hype. Delicious bread and fresh, well-cooked ingredients that come out quickly. Chicken salt fries are definitely a must-try.
