Is this week’s tinnie the perfect antidote for winter?

Our resident beer writer has sipped his way through everything from Swan Special Light to Strawberry Raspberry Ridiculous Cupcake Beers.

Trying out this week’s sip, Simon Collins gives his verdict on the Tinnie of the Week and whether it’s worth cracking one with a mate.

BEER NAME?

Sunlit Aussie Wheat Beer

WHERE’S IT FROM?

Pirate Life has its main brewing facility in Adelaide and a brewpub in downtown Perth.

For those that have somehow missed the Pirate Life story, two young brewers from WA, Jack Cameron and Jared “Red” Proudfoot bonded while serving apprenticeships at Scottish craft pioneers BrewDog.

With help from Jack’s dad Michael “MC” Cameron, who had decent experience in the business side of beer and brewing, they launched Pirate Life out of Adelaide in 2015.

Long story short, Pirate Life went boom — especially in its first two years, when it was reportedly the fastest growing brewery on the planet — and was eventually acquired by Carlton and United Breweries (now owned by Japanese giant Asahi).

The founding trio continue to steer the ship, which now brews out of Port Adelaide with the Perth brewpub producing more experimental beers for local craft lovers.

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT?

Deep in the cold, wet heart of winter is an interesting time to be releasing a wheat ale, especially one with a summery name and can design.

Pirate Life isn’t the only mob doing so (hello Green Beacon, Mountain Goat and European wheat beer pioneers Matilda Bay), but at least they’re giving it a good, hard crack with this golden, citrusy hefeweizen.

Sunlit Aussie Wheat Bear pours cloudy, offers clean citrus aromas before lemon zest, grapefruit and a herbaceous finish. Not too flowery, definitely refreshing and sessionable at 4.6 per cent.

Pirate Life may have set sale early with this one, but there’s a good chance Sunlit could still be floating when summer arrives.

SHOULD I SHARE IT?

No. This is an easy-drinking summer quencher.

If wheat ales are your bag, then you’ll probably do a bit of damage to a four-pack on your own.

WHAT’S THE DAMAGE?

Dan Murphy’s and BWS are flogging Sunlit for $5 a can, four-packs for $17 and cases of 16 for $53.

RATING?

Three out of five. I’m no huge fan of hefeweizens but this Aussie summer take on the style isn’t too shabby.
